Ryna (Romanian) 2006

Official Selection at a variety of film festivals as well as:
Winner, Best Film Award, Cinema Tout Ecran Film Festival
Best Debut, Transilvania International Film Festival
Special Jury Award, Ruxandra Zenide (director); Doroteea Petre (actress), Mannheim-Heidelberg Film Festival

Directed by Ruxandra Zenide
Starring Doroteea Petre as Ryna

An abusive and controlling father treats his lovely young daughter Ryna as if she were a boy, the son he always wanted to have, training her to work on cars with him. She longs to experience the world and dreams about becoming a photographer. He makes her keep her hair cut short and wear work overalls instead of pretty clothes.

Eventually the father’s behavior forces Ryna’s mother to leave for Bucharest where she hopes to make a better life for her daughter. Ryna is forced to stay behind and her father makes an incredibly selfish and intolerable decision.

The accolades for director and actress are well deserved. I believe Petre was in her early twenties when Ryna was filmed (she was born in 1981), but she plays a 16 year-old girl quite convincingly. She also appears in The Way I Spent the End of the World.

94 min. Unrated. Adult themes.
