Children of Invention (American) 2009

Among many other awards:
Official Selection, Sundance Film Festival
Winner, Grand Jury Prize, Los Angeles, Asian Pacific American Film Festival
Winner, Emerging Filmmaker Award, Hawaii International Film Festival

Written and directed by Tze Chun
Starring Michael Chen, Cindy Cheung, and Crystal Chiu

Elaine Cheng (Cheung), a single mother, tries to make a living by taking on a variety of jobs. She gets caught up in an illegal marketing scheme and is picked up by the police. Her two children, Raymond (Chen) and Tina (Chiu) are left on their own. They come up with a scheme to make a million dollars so they can buy back the home their mother lost to foreclosure.

This is Tze Chun’s debut feature film and it won more prizes than I could list above (click on the link to see more). I look forward to seeing more films from him. The performances of the children are incredible, naturally precocious and sweet.

86 min. Not rated.
