Frozen River (American) 2008

Among many other awards and nominations:
Winner, Grand Jury Prize (Hunt), Sundance Film Festival
Winner, Best Actress (Leo), Independent Spirit Award
Nominated, Best Actress (Leo); Best Screenplay, Academy Awards; also Screen Actors Guild Award

Directed by Courtney Hunt
Starring Melissa Leo and Misty Upham

Desperate to get money, Ray Eddy (Leo), a mother of two boys in northern New York, forms an unlikely alliance with a young Mohawk woman (Upham) and gets involved smuggling illegal aliens from Canada.

Early on I found it hard to accept some of the decisions that were made by the mother and didn’t sympathize too much with her plight. But as the film continued and her desperation grew, I could better appreciate that she was doing her best to make things right for her family, in the best and only way she thought possible. Outstanding performance by Melissa Leo as the mother, with just the right mixture of toughness and vulnerability.

97 min. Rated R. Adult themes.
